Event Branding: Design Tips
Design Practices to Implement in Your Next Event

Design has a powerful influence over your event. Design can be complex, but there are a few tricks in the toolbox that you can easily implement to ensure your event branding is cohesive and will appeal to your supporters.

1. Location, Location, Location

Before you design your event branding, think about everywhere your event will be promoted. Your design will need to work well in various formats. Here are several design elements that you may need to consider:

  • Website
  • Social media
  • Invitation/Mailer
  • Program
  • Slideshow

Once you have considered everywhere your design will appear, it is important to tailor your design to each type of collateral to keep your branding cohesive.

2. Use Hierarchy In Your Design

Use different sizes to draw attention to the most important information in your design. Incorporating two to three fonts of varying sizes will help the reader focus on what to read first, second, third, and so on. This also applies to graphics and colors. Graphics should never compete for space; rather, they should complement each other.

3. Check Your Alignment

Your design should appear clean, organized, and well laid out. If the information is spread unevenly, such as the text appearing too often in different alignments, it will be hard for the viewer to take in. It is ok to utilize more than one alignment, such as left and center, as long as your design is methodical.

4. White Space Is Essential

Less is oftentimes more in design. There should be breathing room around text, images, and other graphic elements. It makes the content easier to read and absorb.

5. Choose Your Fonts Wisely

Fonts should be easy to read and should reflect the tone of your event. An effective strategy is pairing a simple and clean font with a font that gives off pizazz. When using more than one font in your design, adhere to the 80/20 rule and place your accent font strategically. Limit the number of fonts in your design to three or fewer.
